Bei virtueller Realität (VR) handelt es sich um eine Technologie für die Interaktion zwischen Mensch und Computer in computergenerierten 3D-Umgebungen. Für die Nutzung der VR benötigt man einen Computer, eine Vorrichtung wie z. B. eine Bildschirmbrille (“head mounted display”, HMD), um die 3D-Umgebung zu visualisieren und ein Hilfsmittel wie etwa eine Maus oder einen Joystick, um sich in der virtuellen Umgebung zu bewegen, sowie eine Computersoftware zur Herstellung solcher 3D-Umgebungen. Eine VR-Umgebung vermittelt dem Nutzer eine mit nichts anderem zu vergleichende Erfahrung: Er hat den Eindruck, sich wirklich in der computergenerierten Umgebung zu „befinden“ und mit den VR-Objekten zu interagieren. Diese Eigenschaft der VR wird als Präsenz bezeichnet. Sie ist hoch relevant für ihre Verwendung in der Klinischen Psychologie.
