Abstract

The history of Russian mapping activities in Antarctica dates back to the First Russian Antarctic Expedition 1820. Since 1955, intensive investigations have been carried out by a number of Soviet, then Russian institutions in order to set up geodetic and topographic foundations for a detailed mapping of Antarctica. This paper describes the different Russian activities, among others astronomical observations, geodetic networks, height and gravity surveys, aerial photography, and GPS observations. The concept of topographic mapping will be discussed, examples for maps of different scale will be given, and it will be shown that, eventually, internationally coordinated activities aim on the provision of digital data and maps. The Geographic Information System (GIS) of East Antarctica can be given as a good example for these developments.
