Abstract
The growth in adoption of open source Web mapping technologies in the past five years has been nothing short of spectacular. Although a great deal of focus is given to the technologies themselves, the genesis of their growth has been in the social and economic trends that have driven technology development and adoption. This chapter focuses on the emerging open source Web mapping ecosystem and the many stakeholder groups that play roles within it. In particular, the chapter outlines the powerful relationships between businesses and partnerships between business and communities of practice around open source technologies. By understanding these relationships, technology users, contributors, corporations, and communities can identify their own roles within the ecosystem and from this establish strategies to achieve success.
