Abstract

This chapter discusses the design and implementation of a free and open source for geospatial (FOSS4G) project that takes several existing open source projects and builds an application from them to support various modes of participatory input into spatial decision support. The approach uses Internet-based digital maps as the medium of communication between either co-located or dispersed individuals and/or groups to foster collaborative discussion on spatial decision issues. The application domain is first discussed in relation to the principles of the current project. The foundation projects, metalevel architecture and basic components of the ‘MapChat’ software project are then outlined, followed by a step-through of its functionality. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of future enhancements.
