Unter parenteraler Ernährung versteht man die Zufuhr von Nährstoffen, Wasser und Nahrungsenergie unter Umgehung des Magen-Darm- Trakts. Die Indikation für eine parenterale Ernährung sollte rechtzeitig gestellt werden, wenn der Patient nur auf diese Weise bedarfsgerecht ernährt werden kann; sie muss aber gleichzeitig äußerst kritisch gestellt werden, weil es sowohl die Ernährungsform mit den größten Risiken für den Patienten als auch die aufwändigste Form der Ernährung ist.
