Neben den 5 Hepatitisviren A bis E wurden in den vergangenen 10 Jahren durch die neuen molekularbiologischen Untersuchungstechniken weitere hepatotrope Viren (Hepatitis-G-, TT-, SEN-Virus) identifiziert (⊡ Tab. 18.1). Die Hepatitisviren A bis E sind molekularbiologisch im Detail charakterisiert und die klinischen Verläufe gut bekannt. Die sog. neuen Hepatitisviren sind häufig auch bei gesunden Individuen nachweisbar und haben bei Immunkompetenten keine klinisch relevante Bedeutung. Zum differenzialdiagnostischen Spektrum müssen sie daher, von Einzelfällen möglicherweise abgesehen, nicht berücksichtig werden. In ⊡ Tab. 18.1 ist das aktuelle »Hepatitisalphabet« zusammengefasst.
