Abstract

It follows from what has been said in previous pages that today, a tunnel designer must no longer think immediately in terms of support structures and linings when designing a new tunnel, but must consider the entire resolution of statics problems in terms of the ground (medium) right from the outset. This is the true construction material, to be assisted where necessary, with action in advance to improve, protect and/or reinforce the core-face in order to guarantee the stable creation of an arch-effect (channelling of stresses) in a band of ground as close as possible to the profile of the tunnel that is able to resist the field of increased deviated stresses.
