Part of the book series: Genome Mapping and Genomics in Animals ((MAPPANIMAL,volume 3))

  • 1136 Accesses

The development of a genome map for sheep (Ovis aries) has greatly advanced the identification of genetic regions influencing and controlling traits in this species. Other ovine genomic resources available for researchers include radiation hybrid panels, large-insert genomic libraries, large-scale sequencing projects, and most recently, the virtual sheep genome, a whole-genome physical map orientated against the human, dog, and cow genome assemblies. To advance the identification of genes controlling important phenotypes in sheep, development of the comparative maps should continue. Complete sequencing and annotation of the ovine genome will further facilitate studies in sheep, other livestock species, and humans.
