Abstract
Recent progress in the generation of multiterawatt optical pulses into the 10-fs range is reviewed. A design, performance and characterization of a compact titanium-doped sapphire laser system based on chirped-pulse amplification, which has produced a peak power of 0.85-PW (850-TW) with 33-fs pulse duration is described. Further extension of the systems to the exawatt power level is aso outlined.
