Der popliteale Zugang zum N. ischiadicus ist ein relativ einfach durchzuführender Block. Praktisch der gesamte Fuß kann anästhesiert werden und der Poplitealblock ist damit leichter durchzuführen als der klassische Fußblock, bei dem mehrere Injektionen durchgeführt werden müssen. Limitiert ist der Einsatz des Poplitealblocks nur durch den häufigen Einsatz einer Blutsperre und durch die sensible Versorgung der Innenseite des Sprunggelenks durch den N. saphenus als Ast des N. femoralis (Abb. 18.2).
