A Brief History of Cosmology and Galaxy Formation

  • Chapter
Galaxy Formation

Part of the book series: Astronomy and Astrophysics Library ((AAL))

Abstract

We begin with a broad-brush historical overview of the development of ideas and concepts concerning galaxies, cosmology and galaxy formation from the time of Tycho Brahe and Newton to the present day. This chapter therefore summarises qualitatively many of the key topics to be dealt with in quantitative detail in the rest of this book.1 If you do not need this gentle introduction, or misguidedly think that history is boring, you may pass straightaway to Chap. 2.
