Abstract
Chapter 5 discusses the procedure to create PDF and Excel spreadsheet reports with Ruby on Rails. A comparison is made with the PHP and Java class libraries for generating reports. A PDF document is generated using the PDF::Writer Ruby library. An XML document that conforms to the XML Spreadsheet Schema (XMLSS) may be exported to an Excel spreadsheet. In Rails an XML document may be generated using the RubyGems Builder gem. We shall also generate an Excel spreadsheet with the Ruby Spreadsheet library.
