Zusammenfassung

Die Konjunktiva ist eine dünne Schleimhautmembran, die den größten Teil der vorderen Oberfläche des Auges und der inneren Oberfläche der Augenlider bedeckt. Sie besteht aus zwei bis fünf Lagen geschichteten Zylinderepithels, das schleimbildende Becherzellen enthält. Am korneoskleralen Übergang, dem Limbus, erfolgt ein schrittweiser Übergang vom geschichteten Zylinderzum geschichteten Plattenepithel der Cornea. An den Lidrändern geht die Bindehaut relativ abrupt in die Epidermis über. Die Basalschicht enthält Melanozyten und Langerhanszellen. Das Stroma der Konjunktiva besteht aus fibrösem Bindegewebe mit Fibroblasten, einigen Entzündungszellen, Blutgefäßen, glatter Muskulatur, Nerven und Lymphgefäßen. In den Fornices enthält das Bindehautepithel vermehrt Becherzellen, und das Stroma kann zusätzlich Knorpelgewebe enthalten. Im medialen interpalpebralen Bereich des Auges findet sich eine knotenförmige Erhebung, die Karunkel. Die Karunkel wird von geschichtetem nichtverhornendem Plattenepithel bedeckt, und das subepitheliale Stroma enthält Talgdrüsen, Haarfollikel und Muskelfasern.
