Die Verordnungsstruktur der Psychopharmaka hat sich in den letzten 10 Jahren auffällig verändert. Die Verordnungen der früher führenden Tranquillantien sind seit vielen Jahren rückläufig. Umgekehrt haben sich die Antidepressivaverordnungen in dieser Zeit mehr als verdoppelt. Dieser Trend setzte sich 2006 durch einen im Mittel diesmal nur mäßigen Anstieg bei den selektiv wirkenden Antidepressiva fort. Auch die Verordnung von Neuroleptika ist im Bereich der atypischen Neuroleptika unter anderem durch Indikationsausweitungen angestiegen. Beträchtlich zugenommen haben wiederum die Verordnungen von Psychostimulantien einschließlich des neu eingeführten Atomoxetins.
