Seit Ende der 1960er Jahre gilt der Ultraschall mit der nichtinvasiven Möglichkeit der Bildgebung als Meilenstein des Fortschritts in der Medizin und besitzt, ausgehend von der Bearbeitung geburtshilflicher Fragestellungen, mittlerweile in nahezu allen Fachdisziplinen eine Schlüsselstellung in der Diagnostik. Seit der gleichen Zeitspanne greift die kontinuierliche externe elektronische Herzfrequenzregistrierung erstmals in breitem klinischem Einsatz auf das in den vorherigen Kapiteln bereits dargestellte Continuous-wave-Dopplerprinzip zurück. Seit Ende der 1970er Jahre wurden der gepulste Doppier zur Erfassung von Blutströmungsgeschwindigkeiten und seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre die Farbkodierung eingeführt.
