Herzchirurgische Eingriffe gehören zu den häufigsten Operationen weltweit. Die Anzahl der Eingriffe ist bis vor wenigen Jahren kontinuierlich gestiegen. Im Jahr 2003 wurden in Deutschland knapp 95.000 Eingriffe mir extrakorporaler Zirkulation (EKZ) durchgeführt. Die Indikationen für herzchirurgische Eingriffe schließen myokardiale Ischämien, Herzvitien, Herzinsuffizienz, kongenitale Fehlbildungen und Arrhythmien mit ein.
