Die Veränderungen der Schilddrüsenhormonwerte bei schwerer Erkrankung oder längerem Fasten werden im deutschen Sprachraum als Nieder-T3-Syndrom bezeichnet; als Synonyme gelten »euthyrold sick syndrome« (ESS) oder »non-thyroidal illness syndrome« (NTIS) [4]. Bei jedem katabolen Zustand, wie einer schweren Erkrankung oder längerem Fasten, fallen regelhaft innerhalb weniger Stunden zunächst nur die Triiodthyronin (T3)-Serumspiegel, in Abhängigkeit von der Schwere der Erkrankung dann auch die basalen TSH- und in der Folge die Thyroxin (T4)-Spiegel ab.
