Psychische Störungen sind eine häufige Komorbidität bei Patienten auf der Intensivstation. Dabei sind folgende Zusammenhänge möglich [8]:

- Die psychische Erkrankung hat zur Aufnahme auf der Intensivstation geführt (Suizidversuch, Intoxikation im Verlauf einer Abhängigkeitserkrankung).

- Die psychische Störung tritt als Folge der Intensivstationsbehandlung auf (depressive Reaktion infolge Reizdeprivation bei Langzeitbeatmung, Schlafstörung, Durchgangssyndrom).

- Die psychische Störung ist Folge der Grunderkrankung, die zum Aufenthalt in der Intensivstation geführt hat (z. B. hirnorganisches Psychosyndrom bei Leberzirrhose).

- Die psy chische Stö rung ist Folge der Grunderkran kung, die zum Auf ent halt in der In ten sivsta tion ge führt hat (z. B. hirnor ga nisches Psy chosyndrom bei Le berzir rhose).

- Die psy chische Stö rung be steht unab hän gig von der Grunderkran kung, die zum Auf ent halt in der In ten sivsta tion ge führt hat. Hier bei ist zu be ach ten, dass anam nes tisch bekann te psy chische Stö run gen auf der In ten sivsta tion nicht un be dingt in Er scheinung treten müssen. Nicht sel ten führt die reale Be dro hung zu einer besse ren Reali täts an passung der Pa tien ten (z. B. Angststö rung). Anderer seits kann eine bisher kom pen sier te psy chiat ri sche Erkran kung durch die Stresssi tua tion auf der In ten sivsta tion erst mals ma nifest werden (z. B. Alzheimer-De menz).

- Schließlich kann eine post trau ma tische Be lastungsstö rung oder eine De pression auch als Kom plika tion im Lang zeitverlauf nach Be handlung auf der In ten sivsta tion auf treten.
