Abstract

The countries bordering the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea have a rather complex geological history (Fig. 4.1). This area comprises a part of the African-Arabian Plate where crystalline Precambrian basement rocks are exposed in the south. Towards the north, sediments of increasing thickness have been deposited. Further to the north, the African-Arabian Plate borders the very extensive fault belt of the Taurides and Iranides in eastern Anatolia. Complex tectonic movements affected the geology of the Levant and are one of the decisive factors in the division of the Levant into different zones.
