Abstract

The importance of carrying out surgical research that is safe not only to those involved but also to colleagues, other members of the institute and to the general public cannot be over-emphasized. Researchers and those managing the research should be aware of the potential hazards of their studies and the relevant health and safety regulations. This chapter discusses a number of common hazards that may be encountered during surgical research and the various safety measures that need to be considered. Well-defined health and safety policies in every surgical research department will help produce studies of the highest quality and minimise the likelihood of disasters.
