Das ungeborene Kind ist potenziell gefährdet durch eine Vielzahl möglicher mütterlicher Erkrankungen, durch bestimmte mütterliche Immunreaktionen, durch Medikamente oder auch durch eine Abhängigkeit von Suchtmitteln. Die Folgezustände beim Neugeborenen, insbesondere z.B. das neonatale Drogenentzugssyndrom, werden zu selten diagnostiziert, da u.a. die Kenntnis dieser verschiedenartigsten fetalen und neonatalen Erkrankungen oft unzureichend ist. Dies kann zum Nachteil des Kindes werden, da für viele solcher spezieller Erkrankungen des Neugeborenen wirksame Behandlungsmethoden zur Verfügung stehen. Das folgende Kapitel behandelt einige der häufiger zu beobachtenden Erkankungen aus diesem Problemkreis. Es ist keine erschöpfende Darstellung, sondern eine Einstiegshilfe.
