Ausgeprägte Schmerzen, Schlafstörungen, Müdigkeit, erhebliches Krankheitsgefühl mit Leistungsminderung ohne körperliche Befunde lassen an Schmerz- oder Schmerzverstärkungssyndrome denken. Ätiologie und Pathogenese dieser Erkrankungen sind unbekannt. Bei familiärer Häufung liegt eine genetische Disposition nahe, Untersuchungen an Erwachsenen zeigten eine Assoziation zu Genen auf Chromosom 6 in der HLA-Region (Yunus et al. 1999). Seelische, soziale und psychische Faktoren, Stress, Depressivität u. a. sind allein oder gemeinsam ebenso zu diskutieren.
