Abstract
Tools have a very long tradition throughout the history of mankind. As early as 400 000 B.C. Homo erectus, a predecessor of Homo sapiens, was using wooden hunting tools that were produced with stone tools such as hand axes, scrapers and knives. In Iron Age Europe, about 800 B.C., tools were being made of iron, which allowed mankind to take an enormous leap forward (Chapt. C.2, p. 392). Tools and the knowledge of the appropriate materials to make them are still key factors driving technical advances.
