Abstract
Knowledge and learning have become key words in the discussion about the development of the knowledge-based society. Investing in knowledge and learning provides a fruitful basis for a society’s future prospects through the increased innovation and creativity of its members. Knowledge and learning are therefore essential promoters of urban and regional development throughout Europe and thriving factors for future policies as well. Especially for the ambition of fostering sustainable development, knowledge and learning play a prominent role in better integrating environmental, social, and economic goals in policy-making. “Governance for Sustainability” (G-FORS), a Specific Targeted Research Project, funded through the Sixth EU Framework Programme, thus intends to draw attention to the role knowledge and learning are playing in policies of sustainability.
