Abstract

Legumes are of great agricultural importance, fixing atmospheric nitrogen into soils and providing oil and protein-rich food for human consumption and high-value fodder for grazing animals. Legumes are also a rich source of natural products with health-related benefits, including dietary fibre, hormone analogues and antioxidants. White clover is a major pasture legume in temperate areas worldwide, making it an attractive target for transgenic approaches aiming to improve stress tolerance and forage quality. This review discusses current research aiming to improve our understanding of primary and secondary metabolism in white clover, with a view to applying this knowledge to benefit pasture-based agriculture.
