Excitations in Simple Atomic Ensembles

Abstract

This chapter introduces the concept of an aggregate state of a system, whether crystalline, liquid or glassy, and whether equilibrium or non-equilibrium. The discussion covers nature of the interparticle forces and of the way that a system passes from one state to another, and the nature of the excitations that make such passages possible. The chapter introduces the concept of voids.
