Abstract
Historically, pregnancy-associated breast cancer was defined as breast cancer diagnosed during pregnancy and within 1 year of delivery. The present chapter deals with the situation of coincident breast cancer and pregnancy, which represents the real challenge for physicians. In fact, breast cancer diagnosed during lactation does not pose specific therapeutic problems compared to all other breast cancer and therefore is not discussed here. Moreover, the term “pregnancy-associated” somehow implies that cancer might be induced or stimulated by the presence of pregnancy, while it seems more a coincidence rather than an association. From this standpoint, we think that it might be more appropriate to define this clinical scenario simply as breast cancer during pregnancy (BCdP).
