The Division of Coloproctology was formed in 1998 by the Section of Surgery of the UEMS. It has established criteria for accreditation and certification in coloproctology and is responsible for awarding the EBSQ (Coloproctology) Diploma which is the only form of recognition of specialist training in the speciality outside the USA and Canada. The chapter outlines the history of its formation and the format of the certification process including the details required from applicants and the criteria (Part I) necessary to be eligible to proceed to the examination (Part II). The Division is also engaged in the identification of suitable training units throughout Europe.
