Summary
Lithium niobate and barium niobate take a key role position in the research on ferroelectricity and its applications. During the last three decades scientific activities grew up in a parallel manner. After a short introduction of review reports, basic properties (structural, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical) of congruent and near-stoichiometric crystals are presented. Attempts to grow lithium niobate of various compositions are discussed.
