Testicular torsion or spermatic cord torsion is the most common genitourinary tract emergency of childhood. This clinical entity is commonly referred to as “ the acute scrotum” and is the most serious of the conditions in a pediatric patient with swelling, redness and tenderness in the area of the scrotum. Other differentials in this entity are torsion of the appendices and epididymis as well as epididymitis which are discussed in this chapter.
