The advent of prenatal ultrasound (US) has enabled the physician to diagnose urinary tract abnormalities with far greater frequency than previously. Pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJ) and uretero-vesical junction (UVJ) obstruction are the most common causes of hydroneph-rosis detected antenatally. Management of these patients after birth remains controversial. In spite of the increased incidence of diagnosed urinary tract abnormalities the distinction between urinary tract obstruction and urinary tract dilatation still remains a challenging problem. The recognition and relief of signifi cant obstruction is important to prevent irreversible damage to the kidneys.
