Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an infl ammatory bowel disease of unknown etiology confi ned to rectum and colon. Males and females are equally affected. The incidence of UC (>10/100,000) is highest in the Nordic countries, in the British Isles and in the North America. About 5 % of all cases of UC have their onset before the age of 10 years and about 20 % before the age of 20 years. The incidence of paediatric cases has remained unchanged after 1980s.
