Inguinal hernias are among the most common surgical conditions in infants and children, with a peak incidence during the fi rst 3 months of life. In children, inguinal hernias are almost always indirect hernias. Direct inguinal hernias are rare, particularly in neonates. The most important factor in the management of the neonate with a hernia is the high risk of incarceration. Hernias have been considered not to go away spontaneously, and should therefore always be repaired.
