Zusammenfassung
Die arzneimittelrechtlich nicht zugelassene Pharmakotherapie ist nahezu der Regelfall in der Kinderheilkunde. Nur etwa 20% der auf dem Markt befindlichen Arzneimittel sind hinreichend für Kinder und Jugendliche geprüft und für pädiatrische Indikationen zugelassen. Dies veranlasste bereits 1962 Harry Shirkey, den Ausdruck des „therapeutic orphans“ zu prägen.
