Abstract
Epidemiologic studies of acute kidney injury (AKI) are bedevilled by differences in definition, which make incidence, prevalence and particularly outcomes difficult to compare. The incidence of AKI varies from one study to another, but most studies have shown that incidence is much higher among the elderly. The incidence of AKI requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) has increased over time. Despite advances in medical management, mortality in AKI remains very high even in the milder forms of this condition. AKI is associated with prolonged hospital admission resulting in significant burden on health care resources. It is, therefore, important to recognise patients at risk and try to prevent the development of this condition.
