Abstract

An avalanche of recent discoveries has led to the identification and characterization of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) factors, a family of proteins which has been highly conserved throughout evolution. While relatively little is known about the precise roles of IAPs, the available information suggests that they play an integral role in the programmed cell death pathway. In this chapter we will present a perspective of the discovery and the evolution of our understanding of the IAPs.
