Abstract
The basis of haemorrhoid disease is the corpus cavernosum recti. This apparatus is composed of arteriovenous vascular formations and provides a highly sensitive closure function for the anus and is an important part of the anorectal continence organ. Dependent on the localisation of the arterial inflow, enlarged haemorrhoidal cushions are usually found at the 3, 7 and 11 o’clock lithotomy positions. The corpus cavernosum recti in the closed state of the anal canal therefore shows a star-shaped configuration between the three main cushions [6].
