Abstract
Laparoscopic appendicectomy has become increasingly popular over the past decade and many centres now favour this procedure, as several studies have shown that patients recover faster and return to full activity more quickly after this procedure compared to open appendicectomy. Another perceived advantage of a laparoscopy in patients with suspected appendicitis is the opportunity to diagnose other conditions which may be the cause of the pain, such as those affecting the gynaecological organs. For this reason a laparoscopic procedure is recommended in young female patients with suspected acute appendicitis. The operation is undertaken under general anaesthesia with tracheal intubation, allowing monitoring of vital CVS functions and maintenance of oxygenation.
