Der Begriff „Retroperitonaeum“ entstammt der klassischen chirurgischen und anatomischen Sichtweise auf einen auf dem Rücken liegenden Patienten: Von ventral nach dorsal wurden entsprechend einer operativen Situseröffnung

  • Bauchdecke (Haut und Muskulatur mit Faszien),

  • der präperitoneale Raum,

  • das Peritonaeum,

  • die Peritonealhöhle,

  • das dorsale Peritonaeum und schließlich

  • der retroperitoneale Raum und

  • die Rückenmuskulatur unterschieden.
