Fittingly perhaps, this book emerged from a conversation among a network of scholars in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine who shared a deep passion and respect for the power that a “scholarship of teaching and learning” dialogue offered to this neglected field. The First Annual International Conference on Scholarship in Radiology Education, London, Ontario, Canada, proved to be an excellent forum to extend the conversation and invite voices from interested scholars around the world. As we shared our work, it became immediately clear that we were struggling with common issues and constraints. Residents and radiologists alike commented that the conference served to publicly “name” their challenges, and they were buoyed by the ideas generated in the ensuing dialogue around building capacity for change. Over the next several months, as we worked with radiologists in our own department and elsewhere, we realized that in our approach toward optimizing the role and function of education in the radiology department, we were both embodying and enacting the scholarship we were promoting with our colleagues.
