Abstract

A considerable number of radiological measurements have been described which may have value in the assessment of the patellofemoral articulation and which may be variably abnormal in patients with anterior knee pain or patellar instability. Measurements may be used on conventional radiographs, CT, MRI or ultrasound and may be variably applicable to static or dynamic studies. Measurements of lower limb alignment, including hip anteversion and knee varus/valgus, are important and are discussed elsewhere. Measurements reviewed in this chapter include assessments of trochlear anatomy and of patellar displacement. Patellar displacement may be measured as linear displacement in the axial plane, rotational displacement in the axial plane and superoinferior displacement. Each of these parameters may be described by a variety of different measurements, and strengths and weaknesses of available techniques will be reviewed. Measurements of tibial tubercle-trochlear groove distance and vastus medialis obliquus insertion level are also described.
