Abstract

In the United States as the aging population grows the incidence of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAA) has gradually increased. The mean age of TAA patients is between 59 and 69 years with a male predominance, although the incidence of TAA in women has grown in recent years. Left untreated, the survival rate for patients with thoracic aortic aneurysms is dismal, estimated to be between 13% and 39% at 5 years. The most common cause of death in the untreated aneurysm patient is aortic rupture, the probability of which is between 75% and 80%. Moreover, patients who survive rupture to operation sustain significant morbidity, prolonged hospital course and, ultimately, a poor quality of life.
