Abstract
W algebras are certain nonlinear, higher spin extensions of the 2-dimensional conformal algebra, i.e., the Virasoro algebra. They were first introduced by Zamolodchikov [Za] and have subsequently been investigated by many people (see, e.g., [BoSc1,BoSc2], and references therein). The proper mathematical setting is that of “Vertex Operator Algebras” (VOAs) [FLM] or, equivalently, “Meromorphic Conformal Field Theory” [Go].
