Der Verietzung oder Operation einer Extremität folgt normalerweise ein Heilungsprozess, der—abhängig vom Ausmaß der Schädigung und der Art des betroff enen Gewebes—unterschiedlich lange dauert. In der Regel lassen sich aufgrund der Erfahrung Angaben über den Verlauf und die Dauer einer normalen Wundheilung machen. Das Krankheitsbild, das in diesem Kapitel beschrieben wird, entzieht sich dieser Gesetzmäßigkeit jedoch weitgehend. In neueren Publikationen wird diese Erkrankung als komplexes regionales Schmerzsyndrom („Complex Regional Pain Syndrome“, CRPS I) bezeichnet. Es handelt sich um einen Symptomenkomplex, der als gefürchtete Komplikation nach einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Verletzungen oder Erkrankungen im Bereich der Extremitäten auftreten kann. Im Vordergrund dieser Erkrankung, die alle Gewebe der Extremität einbezieht, stehen anhaltende, brennende Schmerzen, Ödembildung, vasomotorische, sudomotorische und trophische Störungen sowie Bewegungseinschränkungen. Für Patienten mit einem CRPSI können sich erhebliche Funktionseinchränkungen bis hin zu beruflicher Invalidität entwickeln, die es mit konsequent durchgeführter Behandlung aufzuhalten bzw.zu mindern gilt.
