Abstract

According to the NIH consensus development panel in 2001 bone strength in the setting of osteoporosis is determined by bone mass and bone quality (NIH Consensus Development Panel on Osteoporosis Prevention 2001). Important components of bone quality are bone micro- and macrostructure. Currently there is substantial interest in better measuring bone quality and pharmaceutical companies are interested in using these measures as biomarkers in drug trials.
