Die Thrombose zerebraler und duraler Hirnvenen kann durch die Erhöhung des intrakraniellen Druckes (u. a. Ödem, Stauungsblutung, Aggravation durch epileptische Anfälle) zu lebensbedrohlichen Zuständen führen. Eine rechtzeitige Diagnosestellung und Einleitung einer Therapie ist daher von größter Wichtigkeit. Die Diagnosestellung ist im Vergleich zu früheren Jahren durch moderne bildgebende Verfahren, insbesondere durch die Kernspintomographie, deutlich verbessert worden. Jedoch sind die frühen Symptome einer Sinusvenenthrombose meist recht unspezifisch, was die Gefahr birgt, die Erkrankung zu übersehen. Im Zweifelsfall sollte daher auch immer an die Möglichkeit einer Erkrankung der Hirnvenen gedacht werden.
