Die intrazerebrale Blutung (ICB) ist nach dem ischämischen Infarkt die zweithäufigste Schlaganfallursache. Die Prognose ist bei der Mehrheit der Patienten ungünstig. Etwa 50% der Patienten stirbt an den Folgen der Blutung, meist innerhalb der ersten 30 Tage. Die überlebenden Patienten sind häufig schwer behindert. Nur ca. 20% der Patienten sind nach 6 Monaten unabhängig. Im Vergleich zu Patienten mit schweren ischämischen Schlaganfällen ist aber auch nach einer großen ICB eine unerwartet gute Erholung möglich.
