Abstract

Since the advent of interventional ultrasound in 1969, ultrasound has been applied to guidance of interventional procedures in most areas of the body (abdomen, thorax, head and neck) with much success (Holm and Skjoldbye 1996). Expanding the potential of ultrasound, investigators in the past decade have developed interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound procedures. As early as 1988, Christensen et al. reviewed the many uses of ultrasound as guidance for aspiration, drainage and biopsy of musculoskeletal abscesses, masses and focal muscle pathology in the extremities, trunk and neck. The list of new indications is growing, and today interventional procedures are an integrated part of many musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations (Adler and Sofka 2003; Cardinal et al. 1998; Peetrons and Court-Payen 2002; Rubens et al. 1997; Weidner et al. 2004).
