Part of the book series: ESO Astrophysics Symposia ((ESO))

Abstract

The properties of gravitational lensing are first summarized. We then consider the relations existing between this phenomenon and the quasar absorption lines. We show how the absorption lines can lend additional support to the lens interpretation of multiply imaged quasars and how they can constrain the physical characteristics of the lensing galaxy. We present preliminary results of a study on the occurrence of associated systems in multiply imaged quasars and new results on the size of absorption systems based on recent spectral studies of the Double Hamburger HE 1104–1805; in particular, we set a 2 σ lower limit to the diameter of Ly-α clouds of 100 h −150 kpc. We recall that micro-lensing in BAL quasars may help in discriminating between different scenarios for the mechanism(s) responsible for the BAL. Magnification bias due to gravitational lensing may affect the inferred importance of the proximity effect, and, combined with the described ‘by-pass’ effect, the observed number density and statistical properties of damped Ly-α systems.
