Abstract
Absorption lines of molecular rotational transitions have been detected at redshifts z a = 0.24671 and z a = 0.68466 towards the two background sources PKS1413+135 and B0218+357. The high sensitivity of absorption line observations, in comparison with emission lines, makes it possible to observe rare molecules such as HCO+, HCN and HNC. In both systems the line of sight to the background continuum source has a very small impact parameter (a few tenths of an arcsecond) to an intervening galaxy. Although the molecular absorption lines are saturated in their centers, we can derive accurate abundance ratios in the velocity wings.
